If the monitor is correctly displayed, and the second monitor is displayed correctly as well, then the EDID over VGA connection has likely failed in the monitor. If the monitor stays Generic, then the EDID chip in the monitor has likely failed entirely. (You may need to open the device manager and do a refresh) Reboot your machine and see if the identifier changes, or if the monitor stays identified as Generic. ALL you need to do is change which cable is connected to which monitor. To test this, swap your monitors between connections - the monitor that was on VGA should be changed to Displayport, and the monitor on displayport should be changed to VGA. EDID information is part of the digital video connection specs for DVI, DisplayPort, and HDMI. IF the monitor sends anything, the OS records it, and all identification is based on the registry entry with that record, not on active communication with the monitor.ĮDID information is secondary on VGA connections, because it is not required for video signal transmission at all. The OS only sees what the monitor provides. First, you have to understand HOW Monitor identification actually works - called EDID.
